​​​Safety in maritime spaces, both in the ambit of security as well as safety is fundamental to the practice of authority in such territory by the State, and to the development of sea based economy, resources and ecosystem preservation and to support the population well-being.

The Portuguese Navy actively coordinates with other agencies in order to promote a cooperative environment in the ambit of Maritime Safety.

On a national level, under coordination of the Portuguese Navy, the Fuzileiros cooperate in the safeguarding of human life at sea, in the inspection of maritime spaces, in the protection of maritime resources, in the combat of illicit activities and, in cooperation with other agencies, the fight on narco-trafficking and maritime terrorism.

On an European level, in the missions of the European agency FRONTEX, aiding the fight on illegal immigration and safeguarding human life at sea.
